ASIS International Security Standards Training 9-10 June 2008 - Vilnius, Lithuania

Standards are an industry's common language of performance and acceptability. Standards help build the 'soft infrastructure' of modern, innovative economies. They provide certainty, references, best practices and benchmarks for designers, engineers and service providers. Standardisation diminishes trade barriers, promotes safety, allows interoperability of products, systems and services, and promotes common technical understanding.

Standards cover a broad range of fields-engineering, telecommunications, textiles, photography, petroleum products, household appliances, and industrial safety to name a few. Core principles of standardisation include openness, due process, transparency, and consensus. The development of standards needs active participation to make them work.

Management system standards are gaining attention globally as tools to manage risks and impacts of intentional and unintentional incidents such as natural disasters, terror, extreme crime, and technology mishaps. Standards will have a profound impact on the security profession.
